Sunset Beach
Explore Bird Island

At the last westward walkover at 40th Street on Sunset Beach, visitors are invited to stroll down the beach to the 1,200 acre, pristine, uninhabited state preserve of Bird Island. This is the perfect sanctuary to enjoy beachcombing, learn about sand dune wildlife, and experience the history and habitats of this beautiful coastal preserve.

Long a popular destination for boaters, beachcombers and bicyclists, Bird Island is also home to the Kindred Spirit mailbox, where writers from all walks of life often pause and record their reflections in one of the notebooks kept inside the mailbox.

Be sure to wear a good pair of beach-walking shoes.
